Are you a hapless romantic at heart, or a no-nonsense pragmatist? Do you believe in love at first sight or a slow, steady brew? With matters of the heart, it’s all about what works for individuals and/or both parties.

At the heart of any passionate relationship is romance. Like the sparks of a flame, fascinating romance sizzles alluringly to enrapture lovers’ souls.

Now, you don’t have to be a schmaltzy saphead waxing lyrical about love, nor do you have to be a sceptic who shuns romantic acts altogether either. A well-meant gesture, executed at the right time, is priceless and can go a long way to boost a relationship.

It doesn’t take a lot of effort or money to do something special. For a start, check out these ideas:

  • Instead of getting distracted by other things, look your partner in the eye when he/she talks to you.

  • Make a surprise phone call just to say “hello”, “how are you?” or “I miss you”. It could lift his or her work-worn soul!

  • Say “I love you” only if and when you mean it. Otherwise, don't say it ever.

  • Send your beloved quick notes of encouragement to brighten the day.

  • Set aside time for weekly strolls together.

  • You don’t need an occasion to buy flowers. Spring a charm offensive by getting your partner a bouquet on any “normal” day.

  • Keep a keen eye on your loved one, and listen carefully. You can usually tell through conversations or daily activities what he/she fancies, craves and loathes. Make use of these precious hints to get things he/she would like.
