Can old SIM card be used in 3.5G phones?

I'm thinking of getting HTC Diamond, but my SIM card is very old one.
I've no intention of subscribing 3G, only want to use the wifi for data.
Will the phone accept my SIM card? or I need to upgrade it to USIM?
