Check out the Chinese made products. They offer great value for money though not really 'branded'. I bought a hi-fi system last month and the sound can be described as 'warm'.

Cowon A2 still my current workhorse, although a number of new china-made ones have come up. Saw a player that was about $350 only, including 80GB HDD, can take upto 160GB.

I heard Archos is the best in the market. So yeah, you might wanna settle for that. Cheers.

I have been using the Archos and it's great. The new ones come with wi-fi and I am waiting for the higher capacity ones to come in cos would need 80gb of disk space for video files.
