Anyone has driven a car until it runs out of petrol and car just stall?

I am thinking, how much longer can you drive the car after the petrol indicator light comes up? Are cars equipped with a device that will cut off petrol at a certain level for safety reasons?

    Approximately another 40-50KM at max..
usually a good 5-8 litres is left when it hits indication light.

driving along ECP then suddenly, when i step the acceleartor, the car just slow down.
    i am in 3rd lane!!
so quickly hazard and move slowly to the shoulder.
need to walk with my gf to the nearest station...spc at sheton.
initially, they refuse to sell as it is illegal.
then i must give them my ic and just buy a small bottle enu to drive to the station to top full..

I suggest that you top it up asap. If you want to test/experience first hand how much more it will go before the car stops, I suggest that you have a few litres of petrol handy.
When the car runs out of petrol it simply stops because the engine is not running. you'll find that for the first time the accelerator couldn't feed fuel to the engine.

I did once in Australia during a road trip. The light came on and we can still drive a good distance. I think it varies with different cars. And no, there isnt any device. The car just stalled after the tank is close to empty. It was an old car though.
