How about a red AND black CNY?

Hi guys,

CNY is inching nearer and nearer. No one really wants to risk looking like a big angbao during this festive season although I am sure everyone loves to receive one.

I know some people are totally against the idea of wearing red on CNY even though during normal days, they will wear the colour with pomp (Man U/Liverpool fans anyone?)

I, for one, love the colour black! Come on, even our hair is black. I think black goes well with all colours (yes, especially red). The question is, how do we incorporate black into our CNY outfit without losing our status as favourite grandchild?

Take a look at the article I have written (in ST701 Shops). I recommend 7 ways to wear black discreetly. You may agree or disagree with some of them, there’s really no standard answer. One thing’s for sure though, black is not unlucky and let’s stop making it a forbidden colour during CNY!

I agree that all the redness does get boring. But black is just too... typical of youngsters nowadays. Why not try something like turquoise or hot pink or yellow or gold. Bright colours. You'll still look good but not 'red like an angbao' and elders will still be happy with you.

    continuing...

    4. If you really really have to wear black from head to toe, pair with bright coloured accessories. Those huge bright red plastic chains are all the rage now. Red shoes and a red bag won't hurt too.

    5. Gold does it. Add on the bling. Old folks can't say you're dull when you pile on the gold. Go for it. Gold necklaces, rings, bracelets, belts, clutches, shoes... that is, if you can afford it.

    6. If you think smoky eyes and black eyeliner is all the rage now, think again. It's CNY. We need colour! Besides, Spring is coming! Spring is all about colour. Bring on the coloured eyeshadows! Think pastel flowers or bold vivid colours. But don't overdo it or you'll risk looking like a getai singer.

There is a way. Trust me. If you've only got monotone colours in your wardrobe like me, it's best to source for ideas to brighten up your black outfit.(yes, I made my own mini list)

    1. Pair your black jeans/ pants with a bright coloured top. It doesn't have to be red, maybe turquoise or baby blue. It'll be refreshing from all the redness of CNY.

    2. Skip the black jeans if you're wearing a black top. Blue jeans will tone down the colour of your black top and make you less... 'gloomy'. Accessorise.

    3. You can get away with pure black nails if you have a grandma like mine. But if you don't, don't fret, you can always add nailart to your black nails and voila! You have pretty nails that everybody will admire and nobody will comment about the blackness.

i think wearing doses of black is ok...just don't overdo it (like for eg. the whole outfit is black)

i personally feel that red shldn't be a compulsory colour to wear on CNY. Or else everyone will look the same and the chances of people wearing the same clothes will be higher!
